Disaster Relief Efforts

Catholic Charities works in close cooperation with the U.S. Catholic Bishops' National Disaster Response Network, Catholic Charities USA, and Catholic Relief Services.

Catholic Charities USA, which has been commissioned by the U.S. Catholic Bishops to represent the Catholic community in times of domestic disaster, responds with emergency and long-term assistance as needed. Its Disaster Response Office connects the Church"s social service agencies and disaster planning offices across the nation.  Catholic Relief Services, the official US Catholic Bishops' overseas relief and development agency, is the coordinating office for US Catholics' response to overseas disasters. 

Monetary donations are always welcome to support the ongoing work of the local, national, and global Church community in need of immediate disaster relief and long term reconstruction after a disaster. All donations can be mailed to:

Catholic Relief Services responds to floods in Pakistan, August 2010

CRS is involved in the relief effort in Pakistan, providing families with shelter and hygiene materials as well as water purification tablets, plastic sheeting and cookware.  Also, CRS engineers are now in the process of repairing seven separate water systems in the region, serving tens of thousands of people. (The agency has years of experience building and repairing water systems in remote mountainous areas of Pakistan, having worked on hundreds of systems following the 2005 earthquake in Pakistan.)   CRS is planning 17 cash-for-work projects, paying people affected by the disaster to build irrigation channels, pathways and retaining walls.

 CRS Responds to Aid Victims of Floods and Volcanic Disasters in Central America (May 2010)


Torrential rains brought by the first tropical storm of the 2010 season, Agatha, pounded Central America, triggering deadly floods and landslides that buried homes, collapsed bridges and destroyed crops. In Guatemala, the storm dumped more than three feet of rain in the mountainous west of the country, taking the lives of many people and forcing about 30,000 others to take refuge in emergency shelters. 
Catholic Relief Services (CRS) staff in Guatemala say the flooding from Agatha could be worsened by ash from the Pacaya volcano, an active volcano about 20 miles southwest of the capital, Guatemala City, The eruption spewed ash that covered the city, destroyed hundreds of homes and forced the closure of the capital’s international airport. 

In Honduras, major rivers overflowed also causing flash floods and mud slides that killed 14 people. More than 4,300 acres of farmland have been lost. CRS is working with partners in Guatemala, Honduras and El Salvador to identify the critical needs and coordinating the delivery of life-saving supplies.
